This unit teaches a comprehensive range of knowledge and skills that are important for clinical exercise testing and the prescription of exercise for clinical populations. A theoretical background for clinical exercise testing is provided with a focus on the validity and specificity of selected exercise tests and procedures. Additionally, students will become familiar with standard preparation, monitoring and recovery procedures for exercise tests. Safety considerations, contraindications to exercise and interpretation of test data are also covered in detail. The key target pathologies for a clinical exercise physiologist of cardio-respiratory, metabolic and pulmonary disease are addressed in terms of the appropriate testing, interpretation and exercise prescription. The lecture content has a very practical focus and the nature of the laboratory classes reflects the environment found in professional facilities such as institutes of sport, hospitals and exercise physiology clinics.
