SPECIAL NOTE: 

Students must have completed at least two professional streams in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science programme and at least the foundation unit of the third stream.

The School of Human Life Sciences strongly recommends students are vaccinated against Hepatitis B prior to commencing placement. Please note that students may not be able to undertake this unit, which is a compulsory unit, without providing evidence of vaccination.

Some practicum placements may be outside normal university semesters.

In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and School of Human Life Sciences policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

DESCRIPTION

This unit is an advanced clinical teaching program where the student participates in various pathology disciplines in laboratories within Tasmania, interstate or overseas. Students gain experience in the use of various analysers within the clinical laboratory, improve their bench skills, and further their microscopy abilities in a number of areas.

The major clinicallearning activity is maintaining a daily placement journal. Unit objectives are to: (1)develop and enhance proficiency in both diagnostic and clinical medical laboratory sciences; (2)develop a practical knowledge and understanding of the working of the modern clinical laboratory; (3)become familiar with the organizational structure (including accreditation requirements), and the importance of ethics and professionalism in the laboratory.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT:

Students will complete twenty days of placement in this unit (a total of 60 days when combined with the requirements of CXA425). Assessment items include completion of a student journal (approx 10,000 words) (50%) for this unit, plus on-line communication via MyLO (approx 2000 words) (20%) and reports from supervisors (30%) in combination with CXA425.

TEACHING PATTERN: External: normally in a category 1 NATA-Registered Pathology Laboratory or international equivalent. Students are rostered to various Pathology Practices to gain clinical experience.
