DESCRIPTION

This unit covers the major blood group systems of relevance to transfusion, as well as the theoretical basis of common transfusion testing practices. The practical sessions concentrate on the skills of blood grouping, antibody screening and crossmatching. Additionally, the donation of blood products and the management of transfusion services are explored. Haemolytic disease of the newborn and the adverse effects of blood transfusion are also studied in detail.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Mid-semester test (10%), Practical reports (10%), Mid-Semester Practical Test (10%), Journal review (10%), Final 3-hr theory exam (30%), Final 3-hr Practical exam (30%).

TEACHING PATTERN: 3-hr practical, 2-hr lecture, 1-hr tutorial weekly (13 wks)
