DESCRIPTION

This unit provides students with an understanding of the laws and regulations relevant to Environmental Health, including aspects of immunities, duty of care, and State and Federal powers. The unit also deals specifically with legislation relating to Administrative law, responsibility, delegation of authority, confidentiality, Food law, Quarantine law, notifiable diseases, public health, water and waste management. Federal, State and Local Government legislation is covered from a legal perspective. Environmental Impact Assessment and procedures are also covered, along with practical aspects of preparing cases and tribunal procedures. Attendance at an actual or simulated case involving the prosecution of an Environmental offence or presentation of an appeal will be required.

WEIGHT:  25%

ASSESSMENT:

Exam (50%), case studies and reports (50%).

TEACHING PATTERN:

Five day sessions in two blocks. Self directed learning and on-line material.
