DESCRIPTION

This unit gives students detailed descriptions of microbial physiology, taxonomy and genetics. The unit is strongly focused on micro-organisms which are pathogenic to human beings and students are taught techniques for isolating and identifying those organisms. Interactions between microbes and human beings are described, in particular mechanisms of pathogenesis, and the role of genetic recombination in the development of new strains.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Lit-Review (1500 words) (15%), Genetics test (10%), Mid Semester Test (15%) Laboratory proficiency (10%) and Final 3-hr theory exam (50%)

TEACHING PATTERN: 2-hr lecture (weeks 1-7); on-line lecture material (weeks 8-13); 1-hr tutorial (10 weeks); 3-hr practical (13 weeks).
