This unit introduces students to the pathological processes that underly various human diseases. The unit enables students to recognise common pathological conditions. The eitiology, including environmental factors, will be discussed. The project allows in-depth study of one disease process, its causes and outcomes. It includes theoretical studies and practical sessions in: the histological methods used to demonstrate bacterial, viral and fungal infections; infiltrations, endogenous pigments; enzyme histochemistry and immuno-cytochemistry; and teaches the microscope recognition of some disease processes relevant to these.

ASSESSMENT: Mid semester essay (1000 words) (15%); Practical Report (20%); Practical Exam (15%); Final 2-hr theory exam (50%).
