DESCRIPTION

Gives students a basic understanding of microbiology in relation to disease processes, transmission and treatment. The unit covers the structure and function of microbes, their role in the infectious disease process within the human body, how microbes can be controlled and laboratory identification procedures. Topics include laboratory diagnosis and practice, infectious diseases and pathogenesis, antimicrobial agents, public health and infection control, biological warfare and emerging global infections. Legal and regulatory considerations will be referred to as appropriate. The practical component introduces the student to safe microbiological handling techniques and basic microbiology laboratory techniques.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Theory: mid-semester test (15%), end-of-semester exam (45%),scientific report (20%), microscopy test (5%), on-line assessments (15%).

TEACHING PATTERN: 2-hr lecture,2-hr practical sessions, some on-line material delivery.
