SPECIAL NOTE:
Professional Experience Placement: Students will be allocated to a professional experience placement following negotiation with individual health care agencies. Students may be required to relocate and are expected to travel and study where the professional experience placements are available.
In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and School of Nursing and Midwifery policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.
Students must be available 5 days per week (mornings, evenings or nights as per roster) and this may include weekends.

Withdrawal dates explained for more information).
This unit applies a primary health care and health promotion approach to studying nursing practice in various community and mental health care settings. It provides an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of community based health issues together with an appreciation of the particular needs of people whose lives are affected by mental health problems and mental illness. In focus are the role and responsibilities of nurses in community and mental health settings and the way in which skills gained in these areas apply to other areas of practice.
A number of conceptual frameworks will be explored including the biophysical determinants of health, chronic disease self management, recovery care and the Community Practice Nursing Intervention model (CPNI). Mental health and illness is considered in the context of co-morbidities treated across a continuum of care.
The unit has a large practical component that offers students the opportunity to gain experiences and knowledge and skills relevant to beginning level Community and Mental Health Nursing practice. By the completion of this unit students are required to demonstrate progress towards beginning level competencies using the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse framework.
