SPECIAL NOTE: 

Professional Experience Placement: Students will be allocated to a professional experience placement following negotiation with individual health care agencies. Students may be required to relocate and are expected to travel and study where the professional experience placements are available.

Students must be available 5 days per week (mornings, evenings or nights as per roster) and this may include weekends.

In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and School of Nursing and Midwifery policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

DESCRIPTION

This unit introduces students to contemporary nursing practices. It builds on studies undertaken in semester1 of year 2 through experiential and case-based teaching and learning strategies. The unit's aim is to advance students' skills in critical thinking, problem solving and reflective practice, and clinical decision making capabilities.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT:

Case study (40%), Medication management test (20%), Clinical inquiry presentation (40%), PEP workbook (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory).

Please note that students will also require a satisfactory performance in practice in order to pass the unit.

TEACHING PATTERN:

30 hours of lectures, laboratory sessions and seminars in conjunction with 120 hours professional practice experience during semester.
