DESCRIPTION

The unit aims to provide students with a beginning insight into the discipline of nursing by exploring its historical, cultural and contemporary contexts to assist students in understanding the complex and diverse world of nursing they are entering. Teaching and learning strategies employ a diverse range of media to examine the cultures, politics and diversity of nursing over time. Issues that are important in contemporary nursing will be discussed using a critical, narrative approach. One of these issues is the considerable health disparity between Australia's non- Indigenous and Indigenous population. This unit will explore the history, culture and health of our indigenous population through political, nursing and health narratives. Because this is considered to be a foundation unit, students will receive support and guidance in developing academic skills that will assist in their preparation for continuing study within the Bachelor of Nursing.
