About Census Dates

DESCRIPTION
CAM 305 strengthens the foundations for clinical practice as students develop and apply their clinico-pathological knowledge and history taking and examination skills in the clinical setting. Concurrently, students undertake further clinical rotations in both hospital and community settings, with an emphasis on integrating scientific knowledge and clinical skills. Students advance their skills in history taking and examination and their understanding of professional ethics and the Australian Health Sector. Students continue the clinical rotations across CAM 304 and CAM 305 in the areas of Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care and Clinical Specialties (Psychiatry, Paediatrics and Child Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology). Students develop diagnostic and differential diagnostic formulations based upon clinical findings; formulate rational investigation plans based upon diagnostic formulations; understand how diagnostic tests are appraised and the principles of health economics; find and appraise evidence related to clinical scenarios in a formalised manner; perform core clinical procedures, and create more complete management plans.

It is a unit requirement that all students undertake a two week rural clinical placement as part of the Primary Care rotation.

In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and School of Medicine policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures,
Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

ASSESSMENT:

There are three components to assessment in CAM305; an integrated written examination, an integrated 6-station OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and the portfolio.

CAM 305 Integrated Written Exam
The Integrated Written Examination at the end of CAM 305 will examine knowledge from CAM305 and course material from the four clinical rotations across CAM304 and CAM305. The examination may include Extended Matching Questions (EMQ), Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), and Short Answer Questions (SAQ).

The result from this examination will comprise 70% of the overall CAM 305 examination mark and the carried forward marks of the CAM 304 Written and Applied Examination will contribute 30% of the overall CAM 305 examination mark. In order to pass CAM 305 a mark of 50% or more is required in the overall examination.

OSCE - There will be an integrated 6-station OSCE at the end of CAM305. Students must pass a set number of stations in the OSCE's held in CAM304 and CAM305 to pass the OSCE assessment for the year.

Portfolio - Students will maintain a portfolio of learning throughout the third year of the MBBS. The portfolio is comprised of (i) a Personal review of achievement (graded Pass/Fail) and (ii) a range of clinical assessment tasks described in the Year 3 Handbook and Unit Outline. These tasks will have beenmarked as satisfactory / unsatisfactory.

There will be a summative assessment of the third year portfolio at the end of CAM305. The submitted portfolio will include (i) a Personal review of acheivement (no more than 3000 words; graded Pass/Fail) and (ii) all clinical rotation assessments and clearly illistrate satisfactory completion of all clinical rotation assessments (even though some may have been unstatisfactory at first attempt). Students must pass both parts of the Portfolio assessment to pass CAM304 and CAM305 overall. The portfolio will be graded Pass/Fail.

In order to pass CAM305, students are required to pass:

  • the CAM 305 overall examination (comprised of 70% from the CAM 305 Integrated Written Examination mark and 30% from the CAM 304 Written and Applied Examination mark);
  • the summative assessment requirements of the portfolio, and
  • the assessment requirements of the OSCE.
The final result for successful completion of CAM305 is an ungraded pass (UP).

TEACHING PATTERN: Small group and whole of year teaching and learning activities, and 2 x 8-week supervised clinical rotations (allocated from Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care and Clinical Specialties).
