*The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see
Withdrawal dates explained for more information).
CAM 304 consolidates the fundamentals of systems-based clinical science, building on CAM 202, covering clinical neuroscience, endocrinology and pathology using case vignettes. Concurrently, students undertake introductory clinical rotations in both hospital and community settings, with an emphasis on integrating scientific knowledge and clinical skills. Students advance their skills in history taking and examination; basic clinical procedures; their understanding of professional ethics, and the Australian Health Sector. The focus evolves from the examination of single organ systems to more complex cases. This is developed through clinical rotations across CAM 304 and CAM 305 in the areas of Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care, and Clinical Specialties (Psychiatry, Paediatrics and Child Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology). Students are introduced to the hospital setting, diagnostic reasoning, investigations and simple management plans.
All students will be required to undertake a two-week rural clinical placement as part of the primary care rotation.
In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and School of Medicine policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures,
Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

ASSESSMENT:
There are four components to assessment in CAM304: a written examination, a practical examination, an end of semester integrated 6-station OSCE (
Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and the portfolio.
CAM304 Written and Applied - A written examination (80%) and a practical examination (20%) covering clinical neurology and neuroscience, pathology and endocrinology, will be held at the end of CAM304. The examination may include Extended Matching Questions (EMQ), Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), and Short Answer Questions (SAQ). Subject matter in the clinical rotations will be included in the CAM305 Integrated written examination.
OSCE - Students will sit an integrated 6-station OSCE at the end of semster for CAM304. Students must pass a set number ofOSCE's sat at the end of CAM304 and CAM305 to pass the OSCE assessment for the year. Students falling below expectations will be offered remedial opportunities in the area(s) concern in Semester 2.
Portfolio - Students will maintain a portfolio of learning in CAM304 and CAM305 in the MBBS. The portfolio is comprised of (i) a Personal review of acheivement (graded Pass/Fail) and (ii) the following assessments which will be undertaken by students in either CAM304 or CAM305. These assessments will have been marked as satisfactory / unsatisfactory. Students must pass both parts of the Portfolio assessment to pass CAM304 and CAM305 overall.
There will be a formative review of the portfolio at the end of CAM304. The portfolio submitted for formative review must contain all clinical rotation tasks (described in the Year 3 Handbook and Unit Outline) attemted to date, including those for which an unsatisfactory mark was acheived. A draft of the Personal review of achievement may also be submitted for feedback. Students falling below expectations will be offered remedial opportunities in the area(s) concerned.
There will be a summative assessment of the whole Year 3 portfolio at the end of CAM305. The portfolio will include (i) a Personal review of acheivement (graded Pass/Fail) and (ii)
allclinical rotation assessmentsattempted during the year. These have been detailed above.
The result for successfully completing CAM304 would be an XX and the result for successfully completing both CAM304 and CAM305 will be an ungraded pass (UP).
TEACHING PATTERN: Small group and whole of year teaching and learning activities, and 2 x 8-week supervised clinical rotations (allocated from Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care & Clinical Specialties; the remaining 2 clinical rotations are undertaken in CAM 305).
FLEXIBLE & ONLINE STUDY OPTIONS Note: Class attendance may still be required
TEXTS Information about any textbook requirements for Semester (Sem 1) will be available from mid November 2009

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Campus - H Hobart, L Launceston, W Burnie. Study Centre - V Sydney, R Rozelle. Distance units may also have a campus identifier of I Isolated, N Interstate, O Overseas. Units delivered in Transnational Education (TNE) Programs have a campus identifier of A Hangzhou, F Fuzhou, G Shanghai, J Indonesia, K KDU Malaysia, Q Kuwait or Z New Zealand.
Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units - campuses A, F, G, J, K, Q and Z click here for more information.
