DESCRIPTION

BEA342 Econometrics provides the techniques required to quantify the magnitude, strength and form of relationships between variables and strategies that need to be used to use these techniques effectively. More specifically it examines the theory and use of the Classical Linear Regression Model (CLRM) and intermediate level econometric models, such as: IV, MN-Logit, Panel, ECM, 3SLS, ARIMA, VAR. The unit supplies students with the econometric theory to be able to obtain answers from data using the latest econometrics software. The unit teaches matrix algebra to re-examine the CLRM. The unit demonstrates how to test violations of its assumptions, their consequences and how to remedy them. It then provides students with the knowledge of how to use a range of econometric models for the analysis of cross-section and time-series data. In doing so the ability to obtain answers to research and policy questions in economics and finance is nurtured. Students must apply these techniques to their own research questions and complete an empirical project worth 40% of the overall assessment. A working knowledge of the unit is essential for those students intending to work as professional economists, financial analysts and business analysts. In addition since econometric techniques are now widely used in the social sciences and in the business and finance areas, the unit has wide appeal. The unit is a compulsory unit in the Economic Analysis major and an elective unit in any other major in the Bachelor of Economics and combined economics degrees. In the Finance major, students must study either BEA380 or BEA342. The unit BEA342 should be chosen by those students wishing to undertake honours in Finance or have a career as a financial analyst. The unit is a prerequisite for students planning to do honours in economics or finance. The project in BEA342 provides sound training for an honours dissertation in economics or finance.
