About Census Dates

DESCRIPTION

  • This unit provides an introduction into the techniques required to quantify the strength and form of relationships between variables. More specifically it examines the theory and use of the Linear Regression Model and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) estimation method. The unit also demonstrates how to test for violations of the assumptions on the Linear Regression Model, their consequences and how to remedy them. The econometric methods taught in this unit are essential for those students intending to work as professional economists, finance analysts and business analysts.

The goal of the unit is to develop a thorough understanding of basic econometrics so that the student can, at the end of this unit:

1 . Critically evaluate empirical studies in Economics, Finance and Business areas which involve use of simple techniques in estimation and inference;

2 . Develop an appreciation of the likely problems in data and know how to deal with them;

3 . Provide a good background to the student for a further study in econometrics and applied economics.

The unit is a compulsory unit in all majors in the Bachelor of Economics degree and in combined Economics degrees and it is also a compulsory unit in the Finance major. BEA242 is the prerequisite for BEA342 Econometrics which itself is the prerequisite for the Honours program in economics or finance.
