The University is progressively introducing new course structures for selected courses from 2010.
The structures will differ depending on whether you are commencing a course in 2010 or are continuing in your course.
To ensure we are showing you the correct course information, please make a selection below.
Are you a commencing (new) student or a continuing (re-enrolling) student?
Once inside the handbook site you can change your choice between old and new courses at any time using the coloured link on the top menu bar.
You can also find out more about new course structures on the Course Structures Project website.
SPECIAL NOTE:
Satisfactory completion of the laboratory component is an essential requirement for students to pass this unit.

This unit aims to provide you with an introduction to chemical principles sufficient to be used as a pre-requisite for first Year chemistry units at the University of Tasmania. It is not designed to be a replacement for Year 12 Chemistry as it only covers topics of direct relevance as a background to the first year units. Topics include the nature of matter, the fundamentals of chemical structure and bonding and chemical reactions, the states of matter, an introduction to chemical analysis, acid base chemistry and organic chemistry.
The Chemistry Foundation Unit is an online unit, which operates as a self-paced program during Semesters 1, 2 and 3 (Summer School). Additionally, compulsory tutorials are held throughout the semester, while compulsory laboratory sessions are held as follows:
Summer School - on completion of 6-week theoretical component
Semester 1 - TBA
Semester 2 - Throughout the semester
The overall aim of the unit is to provide a strong working knowledge and competency in general chemistry to a level appropriate for further studies in chemistry. It is not intended that this unit should replace KRA161, but students may benefit from using KRA001 as a precursor to KRA161.
The unit is examined via an on-line examination accompanied by the written paper. The grades to be awarded include Pass (50-59%), Credit (60-69%), Distinction (70-79%) and High Distinction (80+%). Failing grades will also be awarded. Students who successfully complete the Chemistry Foundation Unit with a grade of Pass or better and who have satisfied one of the following: pass in MAP5C or MME5C or KMA003 or HSC equivalent or TCE score of 80 or above, will be eligible for enrolment in first year chemistry units at the University.
TEACHING PATTERN: Computer based instruction based on a prescribed text and ancillary materials. Semesters 1 & 2: 13 weeks self-paced instruction, 13 tutorials,6 x 2 hours laboratory. Semester 3: 6 weeks full-time study (120 hours) and6 x 2 hours laboratory.
FLEXIBLE & ONLINE STUDY OPTIONS Note: Class attendance may still be required

Flexible scheduling -
H,L
You can attend some classes out of normal teaching hours; e.g. weekend blocks, summer schools etc
About Flexible Study Options
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Campus - H Hobart, L Launceston, W Burnie. Study Centre - V Sydney, R Rozelle. Distance units may also have a campus identifier of I Isolated, N Interstate, O Overseas. Units delivered in Transnational Education (TNE) Programs have a campus identifier of A Hangzhou, F Fuzhou, G Shanghai, J Indonesia, K KDU Malaysia, Q Kuwait or Z New Zealand.
Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units - campuses A, F, G, J, K, Q and Z click here for more information.
