Course Structure
Students completing the Bachelor of Marine Science must satisfactorily complete units with a total weight of 300% from one of two 'streams'. The two specialisations are in biological sciences and physical sciences consisting of both compulsory and elective units. Within each of the two current streams, there are a number of possible specialisations for example, fisheries science, marine and freshwater biology, physical oceanography and chemical oceanography.
As part of the course students will be exposed to lecturers from practicing fisheries scientists and school seminars to broaden their perspective of science and fisheries and current areas of research and development. This will include lectures from staff in the Marine Research Laboratories at TAFI, CSIRO Marine & Atmospheric Research and the Australian Antarctic Division.
Biological Sciences Specialisation
The first 100% (i.e. the first year) must be made up of all the core compulsory units in Schedule A (75%) and 25% from the elective units in Schedule B.
The second 100% (i.e. the second year) must be made up of 50% of core compulsory units in Schedule C and 50% from the elective units in Schedule D.
The third 100% (i.e. the third year) must be made up of 50% of core compulsory units in Schedule E and 50% of elective units in Schedule F.
Physical Sciences Specialisation
The first 100% (i.e. the first year) must be made up of all the core compulsory units in Schedule A (75%) and 25% from the elective units in Schedule B.
The second 100% (i.e. the second year) must be made up of 50% of core compulsory units in Schedule C and 50% from the elective units in Schedule D.
The third 100% (i.e. the third year) must be made up of 50% of core compulsory units in Schedule E and 50% of elective units in Schedule F.
Articulation
Credit for relevant units will be given to transferring students.
It is intended that the BMarSc will articulate into the Bachelor of Marine Science with Honours in an appropriate discipline.
