Entry

1 In these specifications 'Faculty' means the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology.
2 Candidates of the degree shall hold a Bachelor of Science (Hons) or possess a Bachelor of Science with two years industry experience and evidence of completion of a significant geological report.
3 Candidates for the degree shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter described, in not less than eighteen months of full time candidature and not more than thirty months part time enrolment, from the time of first enrolment. The minimum time for completion of the degree by coursework shall be twelve months of full time candidature and not more than thirty months part time enrolment, from the time of first enrolment.

Course structure

4 The course is jointly offered by the Economic Geology Centres of the University of Tasmania, the University of Western Australia, James Cook University, Monash University and the University of Canberra. Students will be required to enrol at one university as their 'home' university.
[i] To qualify for the degree the candidate shall obtain 160% by satisfying one of the following options
(a) Coursework and thesis
Students will be required to undertake six units of coursework as outlined in the schedule.
Four of the six units will be studied at the home university and two at other participating universities.
All units will carry a 20% load and have similar evaluation mechanisms.
Complete a focussed thesis (40% load with internal examination).
OR
(b) Coursework only
Students will be required to undertake eight units of coursework as outlined in the schedule.
Three to five of the units will be studied at the 'home' university and the remainder at other participating universities. All units will carry a 20% load and have similar evaluation mechanisms.
[ii] The units which may be included for this degree shall be in accordance with the Schedule accompanying this specification.
5 [i] Units may be counted toward the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with the prerequisites determined by the Faculty and as summarised in the Schedule.
[ii] Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.
[iii] In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the Dean in accordance with the requirements of Paragraph 3.

Credit for study at another institution

6 A maximum of five units undertaken at the University of Western Australia, James Cook University, Monash University and the University of Canberra (20% weight each) may be credited toward the degree. These external units will have the same teaching pattern and method of assessment as the units at the University of Tasmania.

Miscellaneous

7 The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedule to these specifications.
[i] These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2001 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently and to any candidates who, having commenced their studies for the Master of Economic Geology prior to that date, have not passed in any units towards this degree by that date.
[ii] Candidates who have passed units toward the Master of Economic Geology under the specifications in force prior to 1 January 2001 will be entitled to transfer to the Master of Economic Geology with full equivalent credit, or to graduate in accordance with those degree specification operating at the time of their admission to candidature [a].
8 The approved abbreviation for the degree of Master of Economic Geology shall be MEconGeol.

[a] Note: Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference between course requirements under these specifications and those previously in force, the Faculty shall ensure that the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.
