Specification

Entry

1 The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology may accept as a candidate for the degree of Master of Applied Science any of the following:
[i] a person who has qualified for admission to a bachelor degree in Science or Applied Science of the University of Tasmania, the course for which requires the equivalent of 3 years of full-time study, provided the applicant's standard of achievement in that degree course is acceptable to Faculty and/or the applicant has completed such additional academic or professional work as the Faculty considers appropriate;
[ii] a person who holds a degree of another university or tertiary institution approved by the Faculty for this purpose, and who is deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent to a candidate in paragraph [i].
2 Candidates for the degree shall complete the requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than three separate semesters of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than eight semesters of part-time study in consecutive years from time of first enrolment.

Course structure

3 To qualify for the degree, the candidate shall satisfactorily complete a course of study prescribed by the Faculty. A candidate shall:
[i] Satisfactorily complete the bridging component (0%) if required;
[ii] Satisfactorily complete the consolidation component (if required) comprising 50% of undergraduate units with no level 1 units permitted and a maximum of 25% at level 2;
[iii] Satisfactorily complete the advanced component (100%) comprising a minimum 25% Honours level units, a maximum 50% level 3 units, no units at levels 1 and 2, and a 25% project (or an additional 25% Honours level coursework if approved by relevant head of school); and
[iv] Submit for examination a thesis which shall embody the results of research carried out under the direction of a supervisor or supervisors appointed by the Faculty (50%). In accordance with the Rules of Higher Degrees by Research, the 50% thesis will be externally examined for those students wishing to apply for admission to a research higher degree. For those students not wishing to proceed to a research higher degree, the thesis may be internally or externally examined.
4 An individual program of study will be agreed between each candidate and the dean or representative of the dean upon entry to the course.

Miscellaneous

5 These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2000 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.
6 Candidates who satisfactorily complete up to and including the advanced component, and elect to not proceed to the thesis component, shall be eligible for the award of the Graduate Diploma of Applied Science. In addition, students who do not successfully complete the thesis shall be eligible for the award of Graduate Diploma of Applied Science.
7 The approved abbreviation for the degree of Master of Applied Science shall be MAppSc and for the Graduate Diploma of Applied Science shall be GradDipAppSc.
