Specification

Entry

1. Candidates for the combined degree Bachelor of Computing and Bachelor of Teaching shall be qualified for entry in accordance with the provisions of the University's

Rules of Admission

2. Normally, candidates for the combined degree shall complete the requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than four separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than ten years from the time of first enrolment.

Course structure

3. To qualify for the combined degree, the candidate shall complete 400% from units in the Bachelor of Teaching Schedule and the Bachelor of Computing component schedule for the combined degree, provided that:

  1. In the Bachelor of Computing component, students must complete 212.5% from the schedule, provided that:
    1. 87.5% is from Group 1 units, including 25% core computing units, 12.5% computing electives, and two combinations of 25% as determined by two different subject areas (these combinations must be from teaching areas in mathematics and science);
    2. 75% is from Group 2 units, including 50% core computing units, and one combination of 25% as determined by one subject area (this combination must be from a teaching area in mathematics or science);
    3. 50% is from Group 3 computing electives;
    4. a candidate must achieve full passes in at least 50% of computing elective units at the third year level;
    5. candidates shall not include units taught outside of the schedule in the combined degree (i.e. no Group 1A, 2A or 3A units); and
    6. the candidate may count a maximum of 25% of Terminating Passes in the computing component towards the combined degree.
  2. In the Bachelor of Teaching component, students must complete 187.5% as outlined in Schedule A, provided that:
    1. Students enrol and complete the units appropriate to the Secondary Strand of the Bachelor of Teaching, excluding Multi-literacies 1 and Multi-literacies 2;
    2. Students enrol in two Curriculum and Method Studies subjects which must be drawn from: Mathematics: Secondary (ESA 113 and ESA 213); Science: Secondary (ESA 114 and ESA 214) and Information Technology: Secondary (ESA 111 and ESA 211); and
    3. Students enrol in Multi-literacies 1& 2 (Combined Degrees). [iii] The units that may be included in a course for the combined degree shall, unless otherwise approved by the respective Dean, be in accordance with the schedules of the Bachelor of Teaching degree and the Bachelor of Computing component schedule to the combined degree.

4.

  1. Units may be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the Faculties of Education and of Science, Engineering & Technology.
  2. Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.
  3. In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the respective dean in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 3.
  4. Candidates who transfer from the combined degree to the Bachelor of Computing at any time in their candidature, including after the completion of three years, must satisfy the requirements for the Bachelor of Computing degree as detailed in the specifications for that course.

Credit for previous studies

5. Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) at this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculties of Education and of Science, Engineering & Technology may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree.

Miscellaneous

6. The Faculties of Education and of Science, Engineering & Technology may from time to time make amendments to the schedules to these specifications.

7. These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2004 and shall apply to all candidates for the combined degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.

8. The approved abbreviation for the combined degree of Bachelor of Computing and Bachelor of Teaching shall be BComp-BTeach.
