Specification

1 In these specifications 'Faculty' means the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Entry

2 Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Science shall be qualified for entry in accordance with provisions of the University's Rules of Admission.
3 Normally candidates for the degree shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than three separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than nine years, from the time of first enrolment, including the year of passing the first unit claimed to count towards the degree.
4 The units which may be included in a course for the degree shall be in accordance with Schedules A, B and C.

Course Structure

5 To qualify for the degree, the candidate shall obtain 300% from Schedule A, provided that:
(1) at least 100% and not more than 125% is from units in Group 1 and Group 1A;
(2) at least 75% is from Group 1 units listed in Schedule B which includes combinations of 25% as determined by three different subject areas;
(3) not more than 25% is from units in Group 1A;
(4) at least 75% is from units in Group 2 listed in Schedule A, which must include 25% from two different subject areas, as defined by Schedule B;
(5) not more than 50% is from Group 2 and Group 2A units offered by any one subject area, as defined by Schedule A;
(6) not more than 25% is from units in Group 2A;
(7) at least 75% is from units in Groups 3 and 3A;
(8) at least 50% is from units in Group 3 listed in Schedule A;
(9) 50% which consists of full passes from Group 3 and Group 3A units listed in Schedule B, as determined by one subject area, is completed;
(10) not more than 50% is from units in Group 3A; and
(11) not more than 37.5% is counted from units in which terminating passes have been awarded.

Special Programs

6 A candidate may qualify for the degree by completing one of the fixed study programs detailed in Schedule C of these specifications. The Faculty may alter any part of these programs in special individual cases or by a general decree.
7 (1) In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the Dean who may also specify special conditions.
(2) Except with the permission of the Dean, units may be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology.
(3) A candidate normally may not enrol in any year in units totalling more than 100% weighting, or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given semester, more than 50% weighting.
(4) Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.

Credit for Previous Studies

8 Passes in units in other courses (completed or otherwise) at this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree.

Bachelor of Science as a Second Degree

9 In order to complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Science as a second degree, the candidate must:
(1) Obtain a minimum of 200% from new Groups 1, 2 and 3 units (of which not more than 75% shall be from Group 1); and
(2) include the units obtained in a major. If the candidate has a science major in the first degree, the new major shall be in a different discipline.

Miscellaneous

10 The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the schedules to these specifications.
11 These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2003 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently. Candidates who have passed units towards the Bachelor of Science degree under specifications in force prior to 1 January 2003 will be entitled to follow these specifications with full equivalent credit or graduate in accordance with those specifications operating at the time of their admission to candidature. Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference between course requirements and units offered under these specifications and those previously in force, the Faculty shall ensure that the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.
12 The approved abbreviation for the degree of Bachelor of Science shall be BSc.
