Entry

1 The Faculty of Arts may accept as a candidate for the award of Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies) a candidate who
[i] is qualified for entry under the University's Rules of Admission; or
[ii] has completed the Tasmania Police Recruitment Course; or
[iii] is deemed by the Faculty to have sufficient professional experience to complete the course satisfactorily.
2 Candidates for the degree shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than three separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than nine years, from the time of first enrolment, including the year of passing the first unit claimed to count towards the degree.

Course structure

3 [i] To qualify for the degree, the candidate shall complete 100% at each of Levels 100, 200 and 300 (first, second and third year) -- a total of 300%.
[ii] Units must be selected from the accompanying schedule to meet the requirements for
(a) one major in Police Studies (comprising 50% at 200 level, plus 50% in units at 300 level -- a total 100%),
plus
(b) one major in either Public Policy, Sociology, Social Ecology, Political Science, Psychology, History or Human Resource Management (comprising 25% at 100 level, 50% at 200 level and 50% at 300 level -- total 125%).
[iii] The units which may be included in a course for the degree shall, unless otherwise approved by the dean, be in accordance with the accompanying Schedule.
4 [i] Units may be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites in the accompanying Schedule.
[ii] A candidate normally may not enrol in any year in units totalling more than 100% weighting, or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given semester, more than 50%.
[iii] Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.
[iv] In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the dean.

Credit for previous studies

5 Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree.
Students who have completed satisfactorily the Tasmanian Police Recruitment Course (TPRC) will be granted credit of 25% Level 100 (Unspecified) and 25% level 200 (towards the Police Studies major).

Miscellaneous

6 The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedule to these specifications.
7 These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2001 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree. Candidates who have passed in units towards the BSocSc(Police Studies) under the specifications in force prior to 1 January 2001 will be entitled either to transfer to the revised BSocSc(Police Studies) with full equivalent credit or to graduate in accordance with those degree specifications operating at the time of their admission to candidature.
8 The approved abbreviation for the degree of Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies) shall be BSocSc(Police Studies).
