Specification
Entry

The Faculty of Arts (hereinafter called the Faculty) may accept as a candidate for the award of Bachelor of Social Science a candidate who is qualified for entry under the University's Rules of Admission. In these specifications the dean includes a delegate of the dean. |

Candidates for the degree shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than three separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than nine years, from the time of first enrolment, including the year of passing the first unit claimed to count towards the degree. |
Course structure

[i] |
To qualify for the degree, the candidate shall obtain not less than 300%, provided that: |

(a) |
not more than 100% are from units in Group 1; and |
|
|
(b) |
not less than 200% are from units in Groups 2 and 3. |
|
[ii] |
Units must be selected from the accompanying schedule to meet the requirements for at least two major sequences, one of which must be undertaken within the Faculty. |

[iii] |
The units which may be included in a course for the degree shall, unless otherwise approved by the dean, be in accordance with the accompanying Schedule. |

[i] |
Units may be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites in the accompanying Schedule. |

[ii] |
A candidate normally may not enrol in any year in units totalling more than 100% weighting, or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given Semester, more than 50%. |

[iii] |
Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree. |
|
[iv] |
In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the dean. |
Credit for previous studies

Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree. The Faculty may permit candidates to count towards the degree, units completed at another approved institution subject to the approval of the dean. |
Miscellaneous

The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedule to these specifications. |

These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2001 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently. Candidates who have passed in units towards the BSocSc under the specifications in force prior to 1 January 2001 will be entitled to graduate in accordance with those degree specifications operating at the time of their admission to candidature or to transfer to the revised BSocSc with full equivalent credit. |

The approved abbreviation for the degree of Bachelor of Social Science shall be BSocSc. |
