Specification

Entry

1 The Faculty may, on the recommendation of the head of school, accept as a candidate for the Graduate Diploma a person who:
[i] has qualified for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Surveying or another approved bachelor degree of the University of Tasmania, or holds a degree or other tertiary qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent for this purpose, and
[ii] has satisfied the prerequisites prescribed by the Faculty for the candidate's field of specialisation at a satisfactory standard; or has given evidence to the Faculty of fitness to undertaken work for the Graduate Diploma.

Enrolment

2 Except with the dean's approval, no candidate shall be enrolled for the Graduate Diploma concurrently with enrolment for another degree, diploma or certificate.

Course structure

3 [i] To qualify for the award of the Graduate Diploma, a candidate shall attend such lectures, tutorial classes and seminars, pass such examinations and satisfactorily complete such exercises, coursework, projects and practical work as the Faculty may prescribe.
[ii] Except by special permission of the Faculty, there shall be no re-examination for honours in any one unit.

Period of candidature

4 [i] A candidate shall complete the requirements for the degree not later than 12 months after the date of commencement, although the Faculty may extend the maximum period to 24 months in the case of a part-time candidate.
[ii] Provided that the dean, on the recommendation of the head of school, may grant an extension of time to a candidate who has been prevented by illness or other serious cause from completing the requirements of the course within the period prescribed in this rule.

Miscellaneous

5 The classes of honours shall be first class, second class and third class. There shall be an upper and lower division in the second class.
6 [i] These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 1997 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently and to any candidates who, having commenced their studies for the Graduate Diploma prior to that date, have not passed in any units towards those degrees by that date.
[ii] Candidates who have passed in units towards the Graduate Diploma under the specifications in force prior to 1 January 1997 will be entitled to graduate in accordance with those degree specifications operating at the time of their admission to candidature.
7 The approved abbreviation for the Graduate Diploma shall be GradDipSIS (Hons).
