Specification

1 In these specifications 'Faculty' means that Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Entry

2 Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering shall be qualified for entry in accordance with the provisions of the University's Rules of Admission.
3 Candidates for the degree shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than four separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than eight years from the time of first enrolment.

Course structure

4 To qualify for the degree a candidate shall:
[i] pass first, second, third and fourth year units with a total weight of at least 400%, as specified in Schedule A.
[ii] Unless otherwise determined by the Faculty, produce evidence satisfactory to the dean of having spent not less than 12 weeks of vacational practical work experience or equivalent as approved by the Faculty.
5 The units which may be included in a course for the degree shall be, unless otherwise approved by the dean, in accordance with Schedule A.
6 [i] A candidate normally may not enrol in any year in units totalling more than 100% weighting, or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given semester, more than 50% weighting.
[ii] Except with the permission of the dean, units may be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the Faculty .
[iii] In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the dean.
[iv] Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.

Progress

7 [i] A candidate who has not completed the first year shall not be permitted to enrol in any units of the third year without the approval of the dean. Similarly, a candidate who has not completed the second year shall not be permitted to enrol in any units of the fourth year without the approval of the dean.
[ii] Unless otherwise approved by the dean, to complete each year of the course a candidate shall either:
(a) obtain passes (or have been exempt from passing) in all units of the year, or
(b) be passed by the Faculty in the year as a whole.
[iii] For the purposes of paragraph 4, 'Passes' shall be deemed to include terminating passes and faculty passes, provided that:
(a) the total number of units in which terminating passes and faculty passes are counted for the award of the degree shall not exceed four;
(b) the total weight of units in which terminating passes and faculty passes are counted towards the degree shall not exceed 50%;
(c) the total weight of terminating passes and faculty passes in the fourth year which are counted towards the degree shall not exceed 25%;
(d) a terminating pass shall not be accepted by the Faculty as satisfying the prerequisite for enrolment in a unit of a later year of the degree unless approved by the dean; and
(e) no more than one faculty pass shall be awarded in any year of the course.

Credit for previous studies

8 Passes in units in other courses (completed or otherwise) at this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree.

Miscellaneous

9 The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedule to these specifications.
10 These specifications shall take effect from 1 January 2003 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently and to any candidates who, having commenced their studies for the Bachelor of Engineering prior to that date, have not passed in any units towards the degree by that date.
11 Candidates who have passed units towards the Bachelor of Engineering degree under specifications in force prior to 1 January 2003 will be entitled to follow these specifications with full equivalent credit or graduate in accordance with those specifications operating at the time of their admission to candidature.
12 Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference between course requirements and units offered under these specifications and those previously in force, the Faculty shall ensure that the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.
13 Specialisations completed by candidates will appear on the testamurs of graduating students in the form Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation).
14 The approved abbreviation for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering shall be BE.
