Specification

Entry

1. All applicants for admission to the degree shall attend an audition conducted by the Conservatorium of Music ('the Conservatorium'). Factors considered will include:

[i] the applicant's current ability and aptitude for the course as demonstrated during audition and personal interview, presentation of supporting materials, and performance in any tests deemed by the Conservatorium to be necessary and

[ii] their educational qualifications (such as TCE or equivalent) and other relevant experience. TCE Music is considered desirable. Where an applicant is unable to attend for audition, the Conservatorium will require the applicant to submit a certified audio or videotape and other supporting materials as necessary.

2. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Laws shall be students of the University who shall:

[i] Be a year 12 student currently qualified for University entry with a TER score of 92 or above, or such other number as specified by the Faculty of Law from time to time, or [ii] have completed the first year including the units LAW121 Introduction to Law and LAW122 Legal Systems of a course leading to a degree in Music at the University of Tasmania; or

[iii] have passed such units at this or another university or tertiary institution as are deemed by the Faculty of Law to be equivalent in weight and standing to the units passed by a candidate who qualified under paragraph [ii] above.

3. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Laws shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than five separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than ten years, from the time of first enrolment.

Course Structure

4. To qualify for the degree, the candidate shall satisfy the requirements for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Laws degree from the two faculties involved, provided that:

[i] The units which may be included in a course for the degree shall, unless otherwise approved by the Deans of the respective faculties, be in accordance with the Schedules accompanying these specifications.

[ii] Units may be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the relevant faculty.

[iii] A candidate normally may not enrol in any year in units totalling more than 100% weighting, or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given Semester, more than 50% weighting.

[iv] Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the combined degree.

[v] In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the Deans of the respective faculties in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 3. Students who have satisfied the entrance requirements and have been selected for the degree are required to pass in sequence, and in the year of study prescribed, the compulsory music and law units set out in the schedule, 2 electives from the music schedule of electives and 6 electives chosen from the law schedule of electives. (Law: one elective must be chosen from each of Groups A, B and C over years 4 and 5.)

Skills

The components, and the assessment of the Skills unit have been fully integrated into the core units. Each core unit description outlines the skills covered by that unit.

Moot

Students are required to enrol, attend and participate in one moot, to be undertaken in Year 4 or 5. Satisfactory performance in the moot is a prerequisite to obtaining the degree.

Credit for Previous Studies

5. Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree. It is not normal practice to grant credit for Music or Law units unless they have been taken as part of an accredited degree program.

Miscellaneous

6. The Faculty of Law may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications, in consultation, where appropriate, with the Faculty of Arts.

7. The Faculty of Arts may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications, in consultation, where appropriate, with the Faculty of Law.

8. These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2006 and shall apply to all candidates for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Laws degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.

9. The approved abbreviation for the degree of Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Laws shall be BMus-LLB.
