Specification

Entry

1 Candidates for the combined degree shall be students of the University who shall:

[i] Be a year 12 student currently qualified for University entry with a TER score of 92 or above, or such other number as specified by the Faculty of Law from time to time, or

[ii] have completed the first year including the units LAW121 Introduction to Law and LAW122 Legal Systems of a course leading to a degree in Arts at the University of Tasmania; or

[iii] have passed such units at this or another university or tertiary institution as are deemed by the Faculty of Law to be equivalent in weight and standing to the units passed by a candidate who qualified under paragraph [ii] above.

2 Candidates for a combined degree shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than five separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than ten years, from the time of first enrolment.

Course Structure

3 To qualify for the combined degree, the candidate shall satisfy the requirements for the combined degree from the two faculties involved, provided that:

[i] The units which may be included in a course for the combined degree shall, unless otherwise approved by the Deans of the respective faculties, be in accordance with the Schedules accompanying these specifications.

[ii] Units may be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the relevant faculty.

[iii] A candidate normally may not enrol in any year in units totalling more than 100% weighting, or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given Semester, more than 50% weighting.

[iv] Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the combined degree.

[v] In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the Deans of the respective faculties in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 3.

Students who have satisfied the entrance requirements and have been selected for a degree combining with law, are required to pass in sequence, and in the year of study prescribed, the compulsory law units set out in the schedule, 5 electives chosen from the law schedule of electives, 2 electives from the schedule of cross-listed units (one law and one arts) and such units as specified by the Faculty of Arts. One law elective must be chosen from each of Groups A, B and C over years 4 and 5.

Skills

The components, and the assessment of the Skills unit have been fully integrated into the core units. Each core unit description outlines the skills covered by that unit.

Moot

Students are required to enrol, attend and participate in one moot. Satisfactory performance in the moot is a prerequisite to obtaining the degree.

Credit for Previous Studies

4 Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree. It is not normal practice to grant credit for Law units unless they have been taken as part of a Law degree program.

Miscellaneous

5 The Faculty of Law may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications, in consultation, where appropriate, with the Faculty of Arts.

6 These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2006 and shall apply to all candidates for the combined degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently and to any candidates who, having commenced their studies for the combined degree prior to that date, have not passed in any units towards the degrees by that date.

7 Candidates who have passed in appropriate units towards the combined degree under the specifications in force prior to 1 January 2006 will be able to graduate in accordance with those degree specifications operating at the time of their admission to candidature.

8 Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference between course requirements and units offered under these specifications and those previously in force, the Faculty shall ensure that the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.

9 The approved abbreviation for the combined degree of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws shall be BA-LLB.
