Specification
Entry
1. Candidates for the Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Environment) shall be qualified for entry by having a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tasmania or a recognised university or hold a degree or other tertiary qualifications deemed by the National Centre to be equivalent for this purpose.
2. Candidates for the Graduate Diploma shall complete the award requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than one year of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than four years, from the time of first enrolment.
Course Structure
3. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma the candidate shall:
3.1. pass eight units totalling 100% chosen from one of Schedules A to F and complete Practicum 1 and 2. The units will comprise:
3.1.1. six Discipline units from one of the schedules A to F.
3.1.2. two electives chosen from the relevant schedule, providing that students articulating to either the Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) or to the Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) with Honours must include either Data Analysis and Presentation or Quantitative Methods if they do not have recognised prior learning in either of these units.
4. The units which may be included in a course for the Graduate Diploma shall, unless otherwise approved by the Principal of the Australian Maritime College, be in accordance with Schedules (A - F) accompanying these specifications.
5. A candidate normally may not enrol in any semester in units totalling more than 50% weighting (4 units), or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given Semester, more than 25% (2 units) weighting.
6. Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the Graduate Diploma.
7. In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the National Centre in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 3.
Credit for Previous Studies
8. Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the National Centre may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the Graduate Diploma. The maximum credit granted will be in accordance with the limits as stated in Rule 3 Admission and Student Progress. No credit will be granted for graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment).
Miscellaneous
9. The Australian Maritime College may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications.
10. These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2009 and shall apply to all candidates for the Graduate Diploma, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.
11. Students who have passed units towards Graduate Diplomas under the previous specifications will be entitled to transfer to the GradDipAppSc(ME) under these specifications with full equivalent credit. Alternatively, students will be able to graduate in accordance with those Graduate Diploma specifications operating at the time of their enrolment.
12. Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference in course requirements and units offered under these specifications and those previously in force, the National Centre shall ensure that the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.
13. The approved abbreviation for the Graduate Diploma (Marine Environment) shall be GradDipAppSc(ME).
