Specification

Entry

1 The Faculty of Arts (hereinafter called the Faculty) may accept as a candidate for the award of Bachelor of Contemporary Arts with Honours a person who
[i] is qualified for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Contemporary Arts, or another approved bachelor degree, in this University or another approved tertiary institution; or has qualified for admission to a fourth year honours course in another university approved by the Faculty for this purpose; and
[ii] has an average mark of Distinction or above in the major area of study in the final year of the three year undergraduate degree; and
[iii] demonstrates during audition/ interview process the capacity to undertake the Bachelor of Contemporary Arts with Honours; or who
[iv] has a substantial (ie 5 years minimum) level of professional experience in arts practice where the applicant does not hold a degree and demonstrates during audition/ interview process ihe capacity to undertake the Bachelor of Contemporary Arts with Honours.
2 Normally, candidates for the degree shall complete the requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than one year of full-time study and not more than two years of part-time study from the time of first enrolment, provided that the Faculty:
[i] may permit a candidate whose work has been interrupted by illness or
[ii] other unavoidable cause to complete the course over a longer period.

Course structure

3 [i] Candidates for the degree shall pursue a nominated course of study approved by the Faculty on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Visual & Performing Arts. Unless otherwise approved by the Faculty, the subject area chosen by the candidate shall be one in which the candidate has undertaken major studies in the degree of Bachelor of Contemporary Arts or equivalent.
[ii] Candidates shall undertake a course of study under the aegis of one of the following areas: Art Theory; 3D Studies; 2D Studies; Theatre.
[iii] Candidates shall undertake a program comprising coursework units 'Work in Context Paper' and 'Research Methods in the Arts' And a research unit 'Honours Project.
4 The classes of honours shall be first class, second class and third class. There shall be an upper and lower division in the second class.

Credit for previous studies

5 Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree.

Miscellaneous

6 The Faculty of Arts may from time to time make amendments to the schedules to these specifications.
7 These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2002 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.
8 The approved abbreviation for the degree of Bachelor of Contemporary Arts with Honours shall be BCA(Hons).
