Specification

Entry

1 The Faculty of Arts (hereinafter called the Faculty) may accept as a candidate for the award of Bachelor of Music (hereinafter called the degree) a person who is qualified for entry in accordance with the provisions of the University's Rules of Admission. In these specifications the dean includes a delegate of the dean.

2 All applicants for admission to the degree shall attend an audition conducted by the Conservatorium of Music ('the Conservatorium'). Factors considered will include:

  1. the applicant's current ability and aptitude for the course as demonstrated during audition and personal interview, presentation of supporting materials, and performance in any tests deemed by the Conservatorium to be necessary and
  2. their educational qualifications (such as TCE or equivalent) and other relevant experience. TCE Music is considered desirable. Where an applicant is unable to attend for audition, the Conservatorium will require the applicant to submit a certified audio or video tape and other supporting materials as necessary.

3 Candidates for the degree shall complete the course requirements, hereinafter prescribed, in not less than three separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than eight years, from the time of first enrolment.

Course Structure

4 The units which may be included in a course for the degree shall be those listed in the schedules.

5 To qualify for the degree, a candidate shall pass units totalling 300% in accordance with the accompanying schedule and comprising:

  1. 100% at Year 1, made up of 75% core and elective units and 25% in major studies (chosen from Orchestral Instruments, Keyboard, Guitar, Voice, Music Theatre or Composition).
  2. 100% at Year 2, made up of at least 50% core and elective units and up to 50% but no less than 37.5% in major and ensemble studies (chosen from Orchestral Instruments, Keyboard, Guitar, Voice, Music Theatre or Composition).
  3. 100% at Year 3, made up of 50% core and elective units and 50% in major and ensemble studies (chosen from Orchestral Instruments, Keyboard, Guitar, Voice, Music Theatre, Composition or Musicology).

6

  1. Units may normally be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the Conservatorium and as summarised in the schedules.
  2. A candidate may not, unless otherwise approved by the dean, enrol in any one year in units totalling more than 100%.
  3. A candidate's selection of units in any one year and any subsequent variations shall be subject to the timetable arrangements for those units and the availability of places within quota subjects.
  4. In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the dean.

7

  1. Candidates for the degree shall take such part in Conservatorium activities, including public performances arranged by the Conservatorium, as may be required.
  2. Candidates may participate in public performances or study programs other than those arranged by the Conservatorium, or enter for examinations conducted by other examining bodies or institutions, only with the prior approval of the Director of the Conservatorium.

Credit for Previous Studies

8 Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree. The Faculty may permit candidates to count towards the degree, units completed at another approved institution, subject to the approval of the dean. Miscellaneous

9

  1. These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2005 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently and to any candidates who, having commenced their studies in the Bachelor of Music prior to that date, have not passed in any units towards the degree by that date.

Note: Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference between course requirements (such as required majors) and units offered under these specifications and those previously in force, the Faculty shall ensure the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.
