Specification

Entry

1 Candidates for the Master of Education (Honours) shall be qualified for entry if they have obtained one of the following:
[i] a bachelor degree in Education with first or second class honours;
[ii] a bachelor degree in another faculty with first or second class honours upper division together with the Diploma of Education, Bachelor of Teaching, or an equivalent award;
[iii] a Bachelor of Education degree and at least two years' full-time professional experience, or equivalent part-time experience in education;
[iv] a bachelor degree in another faculty together with the Diploma of Education, Bachelor of Teaching, or equivalent award and at least two year' full-time professional experience, or equivalent part-time experience in education;
[v] a tertiary qualification which is not a degree coupled with professional experience which clearly demonstrates a level of knowledge and skill deemed by the Faculty to provide a preparation for study equivalent to that provided for by the prescriptions in paragraph 1;
[vi] such other qualifications and experience deemed by the Faculty to provide a preparation for study equivalent to that provided for by the prescriptions in paragraph 1.
2 Candidates for the Master of Education (Honours) shall complete the requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than one and a half years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than six years from the time of first enrolment.

Course structure

3 [i] To qualify for the award, the candidate shall satisfactorily complete a course of study prescribed by the Faculty. A candidate shall pass 12 units chosen from the schedule accompanying these specifications and in accordance with the structure options attached to the schedule.
[ii] The units which may be included in a course for the award shall, unless otherwise approved by the dean, be in accordance with the schedule accompanying these specifications.
4 [i] Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the award.
[ii] In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the dean in accordance with these specifications and the accompanying schedules.
[iii] A candidate who has already counted towards a Master of Education (Honours) granted by the University or other tertiary institution a unit or units considered by the Faculty to be the equivalent of some or all of those in the schedules shall be required to complete alternative subjects of the same or greater points value in the same field or fields of study as approved by the dean.

Credit for previous studies

5 Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the Master of Education (Honours), provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the award.

Miscellaneous

6 The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications.
7 These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2001 and shall apply to all candidates for the award, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.
8 The approved abbreviation for the Master of Education (Honours) shall be MEd (Hons).
