Specification

Entry

1 Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Economics shall be qualified for entry in accordance with the provisions of the University's Rules of Admission.
2 Candidates for the degree shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than three separate years of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than eight years

Course structure

3 [i] To qualify for the degree the candidate shall obtain units valuing a total of not less than 300%, provided that:
(a) not more than 125% are from units in Groups 1 and 1A of which 37.5% shall be from the compulsory units specified in Schedule B(a);
(b) not more than 100% are from units in Groups 2 and 2A of which 37.5% shall be from the compulsory units specified in Schedule B(b) and not less than 12.5% shall be from the other units specified in Schedule C;
(c) not less than 75% are from units in Groups 3 and 3A of which no less than 50% shall be from the units so specified in Schedule C;
(d) not more than 37.5% are from units in which Terminating Passes have been awarded to the candidate.
[ii] For the purposes of this Rule, percentage values from units in Groups 3 and 3A may be substituted for percentages required from units in Groups 1 and 2 and 1A and 2A, respectively, provided that the percentage values for which substitution is made are not those attaching to units required to be taken under proviso (a) and (b) above.
4 Alternatively, to qualify for a degree the candidate shall undertake one of the majors listed in Schedule D.
5 [i] The units which may be included in a course for the degree shall, unless otherwise approved by the dean, be in accordance with Schedules A, B, C and D accompanying these specifications.
[ii] A candidate normally may not enrol in any year in units totalling more than 100%, or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given Semester, more than 50%, except with the approval of the dean.
[iii] Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.
[iv] In every case the candidates choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the dean in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 3.

Credit for previous studies

6 [i] Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree. Similar arrangements exist where diplomates of approved TAFE Associate Diploma of Business courses may be granted exemptions.
[ii] Students within this group will be eligible to gain credit for up to 12 units towards a second undergraduate degree, the 12 units to be made up of equivalent units and no more than 8 unspecified electives as appropriate.

Miscellaneous

7 The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications.
8 [i] These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2000 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently and to any candidates who, having commenced their studies for the degree prior to that date, have not passed in any units towards the degree by that date [a].
[ii] Candidates who have passed in units towards the degree under the specifications in force prior to 1 January 2000 will be entitled to graduate in accordance with the specifications operating prior to the current degree.
9 The approved abbreviation for the degree of Bachelor of Economics shall be BEc.

[a] Note: Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference between the course requirements (such as required majors) and the units offered under these specifications and those previously in force, the Faculty shall ensure that the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.
