Introduction
The aim of this Honours course is to prepare students in the application and translation of science into industry practice, management and policy by providing a generic structure that allows for exposure to the underpinning aspects of the natural and social sciences, management, policy and law while providing specialisations in the applied disciplines through majors in Fisheries Management, Aquaculture, Seafood Quality and Safety, Marine Conservation, Global Change and Ocean Governance. Students will be well suited to careers in the area of marine environmental management, policy and regulation in industry, non-governmental organisations and all levels of government.
Admission & Prerequisites
Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment) with Honours require the approval of the National Centre Director and the AMC Research Committee and shall have qualified for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment) at this University or have obtained an equivalent qualification at another approved tertiary institution. Candidates would normally be expected to obtain at least a credit average in the last three semesters (FT equivalent) of undergraduate studies.
Candidature is subject to appropriate supervision and project support being available for the thesis topic approved by the National Centre and subject to satisfying the prerequisites required for the chosen field of study.
It is an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requirement that all students undertaking practical work at sea undertake a medical assessment. Note that practical work at sea is not a requirement of this course.
Articulation to/from Course
Students with degrees in: environmental management, wildlife management, environmental economics, ecological economics, environmental law, ocean policy, marine affairs, marine science, environmental science or related disciplines (e.g., Fisheries, Aquaculture, Seafood Quality and Safety, Marine Conservation, Global Change, Ocean Governance) from other universities will be accepted for entry. Students will be expected to have demonstrable experience in aquatic science or marine affairs; students without this experience may be required to undertake remedial study.
Professional Recognition
It is planned to seek professional accreditation by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).
