Introduction
The Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling provides opportunities for graduates with a background in psychology or another area of human services, to undertake postgraduate study in rehabilitation counselling. It is a HECS based course offered on a full-time or part-time study basis and comprises eight 12.5% units, offered on the Hobart campus.
Admission & Prerequisites
Requirements for entry to the course are completion of a degree with a major in psychology or behavioural science, or a degree in an affiliated area or other equivalent qualifications. In special cases candidates who do not satisfy the normal entry requirements but have completed the Graduate Certificate of Counselling and have relevant professional experience, may be accepted for entry to the course. Candidates will be interviewed and are required to submit a professional statement including professional references, statement of intent, work history and police records check.
Course Objectives
The Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling is a skill based course which aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills required for employment in a broad range of rehabilitation counselling roles. These include vocational rehabilitation, rehabilitation following head injury or as a consequence of physical illness or injury, counselling roles associated with death and dying, rehabilitation following criminal incarceration, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The course focuses on the theoretical basis of rehabilitation and the acquisition of counselling skills, both in general and specific to particular work areas. The practice of rehabilitation is covered in relation to specific work areas, examining particular issues that may arise and community resources available both for clients and their families.
Career Outcomes
Graduates of the program are employed in areas such as vocational, medical and psychiatric rehabilitation, human service areas, and within the criminal justice system.
Articulation to/from Course
Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate of Counselling may be eligible for entry to the Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling. Students who have completed a relevant undergraduate degree may be eligible to progress to the Master of Rehabilitation Counselling on completion of the Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling.
Professional Recognition
The Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling is accredited by the Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors (ASORC).
Intending students should note that the Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling is not an accredited fourth year program in psychology and a graduate will not be eligible for registration as a psychologist.
