Introduction

A candidate who has completed the Third Examination of the Bachelor of Engineering with sufficient merit will be invited by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology on the recommendation of the School of Engineering as a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering with Honours.

Admission & Prerequisites

Acceptance for honours is based on the value of WAM3, a weighted average percentage mark computed from the candidate's results in the Third Examination of the Bachelor of Engineering course (see Note 1below).

Course Objectives

The BE honours program enables outstanding academic performance by students in the final two years of the degree course to be acknowledged. As part of this process, it requires the student to perform and present a substantial piece of work by way of an investigative project, leading to an oral presentation and a written thesis describing the work.

Career Outcomes

The honours program, in addition to the pathways applicable to the Bachelor of Engineering (N3A), provides pathways to postgraduate research programs, academic careers and industrial research and development work.


Articulation to/from Course

Students may articulate from the Bachelor of Engineering (N3A) at the end of the third year to the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (N4A) in the fourth year.


Graduates of the honours program may undertake research higher degree programs: Master of Engineering Science, Doctor of Philosophy.

Professional Recognition

Professional recognition of the honours program is the same as that for the Bachelor of Engineering (N3A). The honours degree is fully accredited by the Institution of Engineers Australia.

Miscellaneous Information


Note 1

An Honours Index (HI) shall be computed from the candidate's results in the Third and Fourth Examinations for the Bachelor of Engineering degree according to the formula:
HI = 0.08/3 x (WAM3 + 2xWAM4) + 0.02 x THESIS
WAM 3 = Sum (Ms x Ws)/Sum Ws
for the units of the Third Examination of the Bachelor of Engineering, and
WAM 4 = Sum (Ms x Ws)/Sum Ws
for the units of the Fourth Examination of the Bachelor of Engineering,
where Ms is the percentage mark awarded in each unit, s, and Ws is the weighting for that unit given in the Handbook of the year of enrolment, and
0.08/3 is a constant related to the WAM weighting.
THESIS is the percentage mark awarded for the candidate's final year honours work, which may include oral presentation, marks for progress reports and thesis report. A minimum of 60% in THESIS shall be required for the award of honours.

Note 2

The School of Engineering will normally recommend to the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology the award of first class honours to candidates with a HI of 7.5 or greater; second class (upper division) to candidates with an HI of 7.0 to less than 7.5; and second class (lower division) to candidates with an HI in the range of 6.5 to less than 7.0. Candidates with an HI less than 6.5 would not normally be recommended for honours.
