Introduction
The Bachelor of Exercise Science is a 3.5 year program that aims to produce graduates who meet the professional requirements for registration with the Australian Association for Exercise and Sport Science (AAESS). Graduates may be employed in the private and public sectors. Exercise and sport scientists provide assessment, monitoring and program prescription for fitness and exercise in a diverse range of populations from the chronically ill to elite athletes.
Graduates may also be able to pursue research in exercise science or to apply for post-graduate study in areas such as physiotherapy, dietics, rehabilitation, and medicine.
All years of the degree are taught at the Launceston campus of the University of Tasmania, primarily within the School of Human Life Sciences with professional practicum in Years 3 or 4 undertaken within a relevant professional setting.
Admission & Prerequisites
Minimum University requirements, including Physical Sciences (PSC5C) (or TCE equivalent), plus one other science subject from:Health Studies (HP810, Sports Science (HP817), Mathematics Applied 5C (MAP5C), Mathematics Methods 5C (MME5C), Mathematics Specialised 5C (MSP5C), Biology 5C (BIO5C), Chemistry 5C (CHM5C), or Physics 5C (PHY5C, or equivalent.
A quota applies to this course.
Applicants are advised that a police background check may be required to complete some units in this course.
Course Objectives
The Bachelor of Exercise Science prepares students to work as exercise scientists, exercise physiologists, sport scientists or to pursue post graduate studies in related fields.
Career Outcomes
The course aims to produce graduates that meet the professional requirements for registration with AAESS. Graduates can then apply for accreditation with AAESS as an exercise scientist or exercisephysiologist, and may be employed in hospitals, gymnasiums, and private practices. Graduates can also work as sport scientists with professional teams as well as State and National Sporting Academies and Institutes. They may be employable as cardiac technicians in hospitals and surgeries.
Graduates can also work with State and National Sporting Academies and Institutes (e.g. Tasmanian Institute of Sport of the Australian Institute of Sport) and professional sports teams. Graduates may be employed as cardiac technicians in hospitals and surgeries. Exercise Science graduate have been employed in a diverse range of related careers such as respiratory and sleep technicians/scientists, medical sales representatives, Health/Education project officers, and sports development officers.
Graduates may also be able to pursue research in Exercise Science or to apply for post-graduate study in areas such as physiotherapy, rehabilitation, dietetics and medicine.
Articulation to/from Course
Students in the Bachelor of Exercise Science will be able to transfer to Bachelor of Health Science at the end of Year 1.
Some high achieving Year 1 Bachelor of Health Science or Bachelor of Human Movement students may be able to transfer into Year 2 of the Bachelor of Exercise Science if places are available.
Professional Recognition
Graduands from the Bachelor of Exercise Science will be able to apply individually for membership to AAESS.
Miscellaneous Information
This course is designed to provide students with the necessary background and skills to apply for AAESS accreditation, and as such requires students to complete a practicum unit. Students require a certain level of manual dexterity to complete this. If you have concerns, please contact the School of Human Life Sciences or the University of Tasmania Disability Officer.
Students are required to have a vaccination for Hepatitis B, complete a First Aid Certificate and may be required to provide a police check depending on the practicum organisation.
Some units and practicum requirements may be outside normal university semesters.
