Introduction

A strong demand for qualified foresters from the forestry industry and a lack of forestry graduates has stimulated the establishment of a federally funded National Forestry Masters (NFM) Program. A consortium of four universities, the Australian National University (ANU), University of Melbourne (UMelb), Southern Cross University (SCU) and University of Tasmania (UTas) have agreed to offer the NFM Program.

The University of Tasmania is part of the consortium because it has been the head quarters of the national CRC for Forestry since 1991 and has graduated in excess of 60 PhD students in forest sciences in the last 15 years. We expect this postgraduate degree to be attractive to students who have completed their undergraduate degree and who are looking for a practical career. At the University of Tasmania and CSIRO Forestry we have specific skills in genetics and stand management that allows us to contribute specialists courses to the national program.

Admission & Prerequisites

A Bachelor's degree in Science, Environment, Resource Management or Agricultural Science with a major in life sciences or equivalent. Students without the stated prerequisites but who have relevant professional experience and/or training may apply to the Faculty to be accepted under the Faculty's policy for the admission of non-graduates to postgraduate coursework programs.

Course Objectives

The Master of Forestry aims to facilitate the development of the following educational objectives:

  • develop an understanding of the basic principals of forestry;
  • provide an understanding of the economic, social and environmental context in which the forestry industry operates in Australia; and
  • impart an understanding of the practice and methodology associated with managing and harvesting forests.

Career Outcomes

Employment prospects in the forest industry are excellent. There is a strong demand for professional foresters with employers seeking out graduates with a broad base of knowledge and skills as well as the potential to move into leadership and management roles.

Foresters are responsible for planning, administration, protection and sustainable management of native forests and commercial plantations.

The Master of Forestry provides the qualification required for a science-based forest career with excellent world-wide opportunities.
