Introduction
The Graduate Diplomaof Environmental Management is specifically designed for those with a tertiary qualification, who wish to gain a first qualification in Environmental Management. It is appropriate for those wishing to make a career change to an environmental management area, for those wishing to combine environmentally based skills with their current specialisation, or for those who wish to increase their knowledge out of interest. The course provides a broad, interdisciplinary approach to environmental management, and articulates with the Masters of Environmental Management.
Admission & Prerequisites
The Faculty may accept as a candidate for the award of Graduate Diploma of Environmental Management a person who has qualified for admission to a bachelor degree at credit level or better in any discipline at the University of Tasmania or holds a degree or other tertiary qualifications deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent for this purpose.
Course Objectives
The objectives of the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Management are:
To expand students' knowledge base about:
- the values of natural and cultural environments;
- the biophysical attributes of natural areas;
- the cultural, political, legal, institutional and social contexts in which natural environments are located and managed;
- the role and contribution of planning and management for maintaining natural and cultural values; and
- methods used to address issues associated with biodiversity conservation and cultural heritage management.
To foster students' professional skills in:
- defining problems and formulating objectives for natural and cultural environments;
- understanding policy formulation, evaluation and implementation;
- making plans and using planning instruments;
- employing environmental management methods
- understanding the dynamics of natural areas and their relationship with other lands and land uses;
- the use of relevant and appropriate information technologies;
- analysis, synthesis and practice; and
- understanding and responding to cultural diversity and difference.
To engender in students a professional ethic in which they are able to:
- integrate value issues, ranging from professional practice ethics, consideration of future generations, to respect for diversity and of social equity; and
- critically evaluate the use of professional knowledge, skills and communication.
Career Outcomes
The GradDipEnvMgt may lead to positions in environmental management, environmental policy making or environmental education.
Articulation to/from Course
The Graduate Diploma fully articulates into the Master of Environmental Management (S7D). Candidates who complete the Graduate Diploma requirements can progress on to the Masters by completing a 50% thesis.
