Introduction
The Bachelor of Marine Science with Honours has been developed to provide students with advanced knowledge and scientific training in a specialised area of marine science; training in research as preparation for employment in a research organisation or for postgraduate study in Masters or PhD programs; and equip students with knowledge, skills, competencies and awareness in preparation for employment in industry.
The degree is fully equivalent to an honours degree with any other University School and satisfies the usual eligibility requirements for research higher degrees and postgraduate scholarships.
The program can be taken in one year full-time or two years part-time study. Students can commence the program in either semester 1 or semester 2.
Available specialisations: biological sciences, physical sciences, chemical sciences and marine geosciences related to the broad areas of marine science.
Admission & Prerequisites
Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Marine Science with Honours require the approval of Faculty and shall have qualified for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Marine Science at this University or equivalent qualification at another approved tertiary institution. Candidates would normally be expected to obtain at least a credit average in their third year units.
Candidature is subject to appropriate supervision and project support being available for the thesis topic approved by the Faculty and subject to satisfying the prerequisites required for the chosen field of study.
Course Objectives
The course is designed to provide the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in research oriented towards marine science in various disciplines, beyond that experienced in an undergraduate degree course. Disciplines include: Plant Science, Chemistry, Zoology, Aquaculture, Math's and Physics, Geography and Environmental Studies, and Aquaculture.
Students would carry out an intensive research project on an approved topic under a supervisor approved by the Faculty, and to submit the findings in a thesis.
Career Outcomes
This course leads to career opportunities in oceanography, aquaculture, climate modelling, meteorology, marine chemistry, marine biology and marine ecology. The research training provided in the course may lead to positions in government and state research laboratories such as CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research. The course provides training in research, to prepare candidates for further research study, in MSc and PhD programs, including the joint UTAS-CMAR PhD program in Quantitative Marine Science.
Articulation to/from Course
Ordinary degrees in marine science or related disciplines from other universities will be accepted for entry.
Professional Recognition
Graduates may be eligible for membership of a number of professional organizations such as Australian Marine Science Association, Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, American Geophysical Union, Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).
