Introduction

This 4 year full-time combined degree of Bachelor of Information Systems-Bachelor of Music is offered on the Hobart campus by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and the Faculty of Arts. The maximum completion time for this degree is 10 years.

These course rules and specifications apply to students commencing the BIS-BMus in 2008. For students who commenced prior to 2008, the applicable course rules are those from the year of commencement. i.e. students who commenced in 2006 should refer to the 2006 Handbook.

Admission & Prerequisites

Intending candidates should refer to the requirements for the Bachelor of Information Systems K3H degree and the Bachelor of Music F3K degree.

Students who have completed a Diploma of Information Technology from the Tasmanian Institute of TAFE , and who have been admitted to the course, may receive credit for up to six (6) units towards the degree. Depending on the course of study and the majors chosen, students may not be able to use all of the credit that has been granted, for example, credit for unspecified electives. The status of individual units is determined at the time of offer.

Applicants wishing to obtain credit for study already undertaken within another faculty, or an Australian or overseas tertiary institution should consult the Admission Guide for information on procedure.

In the case of international students, credit for previous study will be determined on application. English language skills will also need to be verified. International students must provide an IELTS score with an overall Band of 6 and no band less than 5.5; or a TOEFL score of 550 with a Test of Written English score of no less than 4.5. The test must not be more than 24 months old.

Course Objectives

In addition to the educational objectives of the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Information Systems, this combined degree has the following objectives:
* To produce graduates who understand the nature of the multimedia industry and who have the managerial skills to progress their careers within that industry;
* To create an awareness of the roles that music composition, performance and distribution can play within the IT industry, especially in multimedia;
* To provide music graduates with the information management, project management and strategic insight to take leading positions within the emerging multimedia industry.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Information Systems-Bachelor of Music could expect to obtain employment in multimedia, project management, information management and as managers in the music and IT industries.

The arrangements for the individual Bachelor of Information Systems and Bachelor of Music degrees will apply.


Professional Recognition

Associate membership of the Australian Computer Society. Graduates of the Bachelor of Information Systems could expect to find employment as a business analyst, database analyst, systems analyst, IT project manager, IT manager, information manager, database administrator, IT administrator or manager, telecommunications manager, IT consultant, electronic commerce or electronic business consultant, web developer, webmaster.

Miscellaneous Information

Bachelor of Music (Advanced Honours)

This program is available to high achieving students in the BMus component of the combined BIS-BMus.

This is a special program that recognises high achieving students. Entry to the program is by invitation through the recommendation of the Conservatorium's audition panel and is based on a student's performance at audition, an interview and entrance/placement examination. In order to remain in the program, students will have to achieve at least distinction results in their major study units and maintain a credit average in all other units. Students not initially admitted to the program but who achieve distinctions or better in their major study units and maintain a credit average in all other units will be invited to be part of the program. At the discretion of the Dean students transferring from other institutions may be eligible to enter the program.

Students participating in this program will be required to fulfill all the normal BMus component requirements and will be encouraged to develop their academic potential through participation in targeted research seminars. Individual academic mentoring and advice is also provided.
