Introduction
Admission & Prerequisites
Completion of the Advanced Diploma of Nautical Science or other equivalent qualifications or experience in the maritime industry (such as Master Class 2 Certificate of Competency).
International students will require IELTS Level 6.0
Articulation to/from Course
The articulated structure of this degree incorporates the Diploma of Nautical Science and the Advanced Diploma of Nautical Science. Because seafarer education is regulated to an international standard, students holding STCW95 certificates of competency (as issued by AMSA or an equivalent overseas regulator) will be able to enter deck programmes with full credit for all units up to the level of the certificate of competency held. For example, an applicant with an AMSA Certificate of Deck Watchkeeper will be able to enrol directly into the Advanced Diploma, whilst a certified Ship Master will be able to enrol directly into the degree.
The Bachelor of Applied Science (Maritime Operations) will articulate directly into a number of post graduate courses that are offered by the National Centre for Ports and Shipping in the area of Maritime Logistics and Management and Ports and Terminal Management.
Applicants holding an Advanced Diploma or equivalent who are able to demonstrate significant industrial and/or seatime experience may also elect to articulate directly into the postgraduate courses referred to above.
Professional Recognition
The degree does not lead to professional recognition.
The current Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas meet the approved courses element specified under Marine Orders, and AMSA approval of the revised Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science is anticipated. It should be noted that AMSA requires students to achieve particular grades for each unit if they are seeking a certificate of competency. For example, a student may pass a unit such as JND243 Offshore and Celestial Navigation with a mark of 50%, but AMSA requires the student to achieve a minimum mark of 70% (i.e. a Distinction) if they are seeking certification. AMSA required grades are shown in AMSA Table 1.
Consequent to the above, students who have passed a unit but who have not achieved the AMSA required grade will be offered one supplementary examination at the first opportunity. Thereafter, they will be required to repeat the unit at their own expense.
The standard University grading scheme applies to the degree and to students who elect to follow the shore based route of the Diploma and Advance Diploma.
