Introduction
The program concentrates on the 'applied marine/maritime' strategy within the context of the University of Tasmania EDGE agenda by continuing with the development of undergraduate degrees that focus more strongly on translational science by providing a trans-disciplinary education experience. This approach will prepare graduates for the market place either within their majored discipline or at the science-policy interface in government, non-governmental organisations, or as science communicators.
Admission & Prerequisites
Satisfactory completion of Year 12 (TCE, VCE, HSC or equivalent), including English, Mathematics and a Science subject. A TER score of 60 or above is required for entry. Mature-age applicants with relevant experience may be given special consideration. It is an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requirement that all students undertaking practical work at sea undertake a medical assessment. Note that practical work at sea is not a requirement of this course.
Articulation to/from Course
Applicants who are currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Aquaculture, Bachelor of Applied Science (Fisheries), Bachelor of Administration (Marine Resources) or Bachelor of Administration (Marine and Coastal Conservation) will be able to articulate into the new degree with full credit.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment) will be able eligible to enrol in the Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment) with Honours if they have at least a credit average in the last 3 semesters (full-time equivalent) of the BAppSc(Marine Environment).
Professional Recognition
It is planned to seek professional accreditation by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).
