Introduction

The ten month study program covers all the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requirements of the STCW 95 Engineer Class 1 & 2 Certificates of Competency including all the required short courses.

Graduates are also awarded an internationally accredited Advanced Diploma/Diploma. Students wishing to qualify for a Diploma in Maritime Engineering complete their studies in October. Provided that they meet the AMSA requirements for eligibility, they may then attempt the Class 2 Oral examinations. Alternatively, they can complete the full Advanced Diploma and meet the academic requirements for BOTH Class 1 and Class 2, before attempting Class 2 orals. Class 1 candidates must complete the full course.

Admission & Prerequisites

  • Diploma of Marine Engineering (Watchkeeper) or Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved certificate of competence;
  • Sea experience determined by AMSA. See www.amsa.gov.au ;
  • Students with English as a second language require an IELTS score of at least 6.0;
  • AMSA approved medical requirements and eyesight test.

Students may commence the course in either Semester 1 or Semester 2. However, both semesters must be completed before the AMSA Oral examination is attempted.

Career Outcomes

The Diploma and Advanced Diploma are internationally-accredited engineering qualifications. Graduates who have additional AMSA Certificates of Competency qualify for marine engineering careers at sea.


Articulation to/from Course


After completion of the ADME, students have the option of enrolling in the degree program with up to 2 years exemptions.
