Introduction
This 2-year full-time course is offered by the National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainaiblity and is available at Launceston. Subject to attendance and timetable requirements, part-time enrolment may be possible.
Admission & Prerequisites
Students may enter through a number of pathways:
(i) Satisfactory achievement (SA) or better in a minimum of two pre-tertiary 'C' subjects preferably with English, Mathematics or a Science subject.
(ii) Mature-age applicants with relevant experience may be given special consideration.
(iii) Students completing relevant VET/TAFE certificate level units may be given special consideration.
Course Objectives
The Associate Degree in Aquaculture has been specifically designed to offer student education and training in aquaculture and to prepare students for the workplace. This is achieved through a mix of vocational, scientific and technological activities together with work experience.In addition to fostering reliability, the course emphasises the development of skills which lead to independence in the work place and the ability to work in a team situation.
Career Outcomes
The practical nature of this course, together with the current expansion of the aquaculture industry, ensures ready employment as farm workers throughout Australia. Graduates are able to work in all facets of aquaculture production, including fish, shellfish, live feeds and algal culture, and systems maintenance.
Articulation to/from Course
Applicants who have completed relevant nationally accredited units of competence (VET, TAFE) will be considered for admission into the Associate Degree (Aquaculture).
Students completing the new Associate Degree (Aquaculture) will be able to articulate into the recently approved Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment) majoring in Aquaculture if they have achieved credit or better grades for the Aquaculture Production Techniques and Aquaculture Hatchery Production Techniques units.
Miscellaneous Information
It is an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requirement that all students undertaking practical work at sea undertake a medical assessment. Note that practical work at sea is not a requirement of this course.
