Introduction

The Graduate Diploma of Nursing comprises the second level of the Master of Clinical Nursing program. Students may exit with a Graduate Diploma or apply to continue within the program and complete a Master of Clinical Nursing qualification.

The Graduate Diploma is offered part-time only, over four semesters. The maximum time for completion is four years. With the exceptions of Child and Family Health Nursing and Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing all specialisations are offered completely online. In most specialisations, students must have access to clinical practice in the specialty area.
Please note that graduate programs are offered subject to student demand and the availability of School of Nursing and Midwifery resources.

Admission & Prerequisites

An applicant must: [i] be a registered nurse in Australia and hold a current practising certificate, or [ii] if an overseas applicant, have had his/her nursing qualifications assessed by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council or the Nursing Board of Tasmania and be eligible for registration in Australia, and normally have had at least two years of full-time experience in relevant nursing practice within the last two years (or equivalent); [iii] hold an undergraduate degree in nursing with a grade point average of at least a credit (or equivalent); or [iv] have qualifications or experience deemed to be the equivalent of one of the above.

In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and the School of Nursing and Midwifery policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this course. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.
