Introduction

This course is comprised of two pathways: entry to practice (Schedule A); and upgrading to a Graduate Diploma (Schedule B).

Admission & Prerequisites

To be eligible for entry into the Entry to Practice pathway of the course applicants shall:
i. Be currently registered as a nurse and/or midwife with the Nursing Board of Tasmania (NBT) and hold a current practicing certificate or be eligible to obtain one.
ii. Have completed a tertiary qualification in nursing or equivalent.
or iii. Have qualifications and experience deemed by the Faculty of Health Science to be equivalent to (ii) above.
iv. Attend for interview and satisfactorily complete examinations and practical tests as required by the SNM.
v. Produce evidence of recent nursing experience in an appropriate care setting.
Entry Requirements for Upgrade Students
To be eligible for entry into the Upgrade to Graduate Diploma pathways of the course applicants shall:
i. Be currently registered as a nurse with the NBT and hold a current practicing certificate or be eligible to obtain one. Applicants must be registered as a midwife with the NBT but do not hold a current practicing certificate as a midwife.
ii. Have completed a tertiary qualification in nursing or equivalent.
or iii. Have qualifications and experience deemed by the Faculty of Health Science to be equivalent to (ii) above.
iv. Attend for interview and satisfactorily complete examinations and practical tests as required by the SNM.
v. Produce evidence of recent nursing experience in an appropriate care setting.
Entry Requirements for Refresher or Upgrade Students
To be eligible for entry into the Refresher or Upgrade to Graduate Diploma pathways of the course applicants shall:
i. Be currently registered as a midwife with the NBT and hold a current practicing certificate or be eligible to obtain one.
ii. Have completed a tertiary qualification in nursing or equivalent.
or iii. Have qualifications and experience deemed by the Faculty of Health Science to be equivalent to (ii) above.
iv. Attend for interview and satisfactorily complete examinations and practical tests as required by the SNM.
v. Produce evidence of recent midwifery experience.

In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and the School of Nursing and Midwifery policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this course. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course the graduate will:

  • Function as a midwifery practitioner competent to provide comprehensive care for women and their families during normal pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council National Competency Standards for the Midwife (2006)
  • Have an understanding of women's health issues in relation to the childbearing experience.
  • Demonstrate an ability to facilitate the development of social support systems for women during the childbearing years.
  • Provide women and their families with information that will facilitate them in making informed decisions about the care that they wish to receive.
  • Identify situations that fall outside the normal birth process and initiate care as required.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide safe and effective care for women who experience complications during pregnancy, birth or the postnatal period.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of contemporary trends in midwifery practice and the evidence that informs such practice.
  • Recognise the importance of life-long learning through the skills of critical and reflective thinking.
  • Understand the parameters for professional midwifery practice.
  • Critically contribute to the discussion of trends and issues in current midwifery practice.

Career Outcomes

A graduate is eligible for registration as a midwife.


Professional Recognition

Graduates may be recognised by Nursing Boards or Midwifery organisations.
