Introduction

The Bachelor of Nursing (Fast Track) course is offered in two years full time including two spring schools (six full time semesters)

Admission & Prerequisites

University admission. In addition, suggested TCE subjects are English, Science and Humanities.

Applicants (other than those admitted on year 12 results my be required to complete a psychometric test and/or attend for interview.

Students in courses offered by the School of Nursing & Midwifery that have compulsory clinical components must apply for a National Police History Record check (NPHRC), in order to be placed in health care agencies. The NPHRC must be completed before a student can attend any Professional Experience Placement.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery will require all students to acknowledge their understanding and acceptance of the Faculty of Health Science Infectious Diseases Policy at the time of or as soon as practicable after enrolment. Students will be required to sign a declaration that states they have both read and understood the policy and recognise their rights and responsibilities under the policy, and return the signed declaration to the School by the date stipulated.

Students who are required to undertake Professional Experience Placement must document their compliance with the immunisation policy by providing a completed Health Care Provider Form and, if applicable, a completed Tuberculosis Screening Form to the School in which they are enrolled prior to commencement of the first placement.

Course Objectives

The educational objectives of the Bachelor of Nursing are to:
* prepare students for a broad spectrum of first level practice roles in community health nursing, acute care and mental health nursing;
* foster a commitment to life-long learning, critical reflective thinking and professional growth;
* establish a discipline framework of knowledge in preparation for both professional life and graduate studies in nursing.

Career Outcomes

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a nurse with a state regulatory authority.

There are employment opportunities in many diverse healthcare settings for Registered Nurses.

Graduates are able to pursue postgraduate opportunities in Nursing or other related disciplines.


Articulation to/from Course

Students may articulate from the Bachelor of Nursing to the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours or to the Graduate Certificate, or Graduate Diploma in Nursing after six months post registration experience


Professional Recognition

Graduates with a Bachelor of Nursing are eligible to apply for registration as a nurse with a state regulatory authority and graduates with a current practising certificate may be eligible for employment in many other English speaking countries.

Miscellaneous Information

Students undertaking the two year program, may be required to undertake Professional Experience Placement in the southern, northern or north-western region of Tasmania depending on placement availability. There are restricted numbers of placements in all regions and students may be required to relocate to undertake professional experience.
Academic progress
Progression from year to year depends on satisfactory completion of the relevant units outlined in the schedule. Students who fail 25% or more in any semester will have their pathway reviewed by the School and must enrol in the stipulated pathway.
