Introduction

Admission & Prerequisites

Possession of the University's basic admissions requirements. No other prerequisites apply for the BBus component of the degree. However for the Economics component of the combined degree, students are required to have MAP5C Mathematics Applied, or an equivalent, or, a higher level mathematics subject, as approved by the School of Economics and Finance and/or the Faculty of Business.

Applicants who do not have the mathematics prerequisite and who wish to enrol for this combined degree should contact the Faculty Office (03) 6226 2269 concerning a pathway into the BEccomponent of the combined degree.Students returning to study either after a long absence and/or new students, who have the mathematics prerequisite but who lack confidence in their quantitative skills should enrol in either UPP090 Bridging Maths or BEA109 Introduction to Quantitative Methods before enrolling in BEA140 Quantitative Methods.

International students who have the mathematics prerequisite but who lack confidence in their quantitative skills and who would like to undertake a mathematics bridging program may only take BEA109.

Students who have completed approved courses in a diploma or advanced diploma in a business related discipline and who have satisfactorily completed the course may receive credit into the degree. The status of individual units is determined at the time of offer. Faculty also offers direct credit for its awards. For example, a BBus student wishing to transfer to the BEc with credit and vice versa receives direct credit. Students who wish to transfer into a combined degree will also receive direct credit. Applicants wishing to obtain credit for study already undertaken within another faculty, or an Australian or overseas tertiary institution should consult the Admission Guide for information on procedure.

Depending on the course of study and the majors chosen, students may not be able to use all of the credit that has been granted, for example, credit for unspecified electives.

In the case of international students, credit for previous study will be determined on application. English language skills will also need to be verified. International students must provide an IELTS score with an overall Band of 6 and no band less than 5.5; or a TOEFL score of 550 with a Test of Written English score of no less than 4.5. Career Outcomes

The BBus component of the combined degreespecifically prepares students to work in accounting, corporate governance, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, management, marketing, information systems, international business, in human resource management and tourism.

The BEc component of the combined degree opens up many career opportunities. Past graduates have established careers in a wide range of activities - some examples include: central banking, commercial consulting, commercial banking, local government, administration, management, market research, merchant banking, political advising, stockbroking and teaching.

If BBus students wish to be eligible for membership of a professional body they will need to select units endorsed by that body. The Faculty of Business offers units to enable students to apply to join the following professional bodies:

Miscellaneous Information

Honours degree in Economics or Business


An honours degree in either economics or in business requires one year of full-time study in addition to the requirements for the respective BEc or BBus pass degree or a combined degree. Please contact the School of Economics and Finance or the relevant school in Business for further details.
