Introduction
The Diploma in Music Performance focuses on the acquisition and development of ensemble performance skill. The program is for gifted performers who wish to pursue a dedicated period of study with an emphasis on repertoire and immersion in professional ensemble practice as a means to develop greater skills (technical, professional and artistic) appropriate to ensemble situations.
Course Objectives
The educational objectives of this course are to provide performance students the opportunity to spend a year focussed exclusively on practical music-making activities to develop interpretative artistry in an ensemble environment. The units of study in this course require regular and dedicated periods of effective personal practice and preparation as well as greater awareness and development of the ability to learn and react quickly in an ensemble environment: in an intensive rehearsal period musicians must be able to understand, execute and remember the needs of the conductor, or ensemble director. Time spent talking in a rehearsal is usually wasted time: ensemble musicians hear and communicate through musical gesture and sound, the musician who cannot hear meaning will not survive in the profession. These are skills that are learnt in situ: this year of study will provide students desiring this type of learning experience.
Devoting time and focus to improve instrumental and ensemble skills develops understanding and awareness of professional practice: reflections on preparation, execution and evaluation are at the core of the learning experience for this course, and vital skills for performing musicians.
The assessment of learning needs to allow students to demonstrate their ability to communicate through performance. Music performers work with sound to create affect in real time. In real time, intentions have little impact: performers must make the moment work and this can only be assessed in performance.
