Introduction

The Graduate Certificate of Education offers specialisations in:

o Professional Learning and School Improvement
o Science & Mathematics
o Online & ICT
o Adult Learning
o Global Education
o Leadership
o Health & Wellbeing
o Literacy
o TESOL
o Research

The TESOL specialisation is available in either a fully face-to-face or flexible mode of delivery.

All other specialisations are primarily studied/delivered by flexible mode. The units are offered in a variety of ways including face to face over summer semester, by self-paced print and on-line materials, web-based and negotiated study. There are no lectures to attend during Semester 1 and 2. Occasional informal seminars are organised but non-compulsory to attend.

This course is offered on a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) basis to eligible domestic students. Student Contributions are established per unit and can be found in the unit descriptions within the course schedule. Click on 'View fees for this unit' and select 'Student Contribution (HECS) Post 2009' as the fee type.

Admission & Prerequisites

This course is available to graduates in Education, graduates in other disciplines with a Diploma of Education, or Bachelor of Teaching or to those holding equivalent qualifications.Graduates from non-education programs are eligible to undertake this program.

TESOL Specialisation
Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) is a specialisation in the Graduate Certificate of Education. Entry into the Graduate Certificate of Education (TESOL) is available to graduates of any discipline, provided you can support your interest in this area through previous work experience, or a supporting statement. Students undertaking the TESOL specialisation can study in either a fully face-to-face or flexible mode of delivery.

Course Objectives


This degree is designed to provide postgraduate level coursework for professionals who are associated with the practice of education. It is intended to enable competent, experienced professionals to broaden, deepen, update and integrate knowledge of their specialised area of interest and expertise.

Our objectives are to;

  • Develop practical understanding of teaching as an "evidence based profession".
  • Engage in research to promote critical reflective practice which will enhance the outcomes of learners in educational contexts.
  • Explore theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning in a range of contexts including schools, workplaces and community settings.
  • Advance your knowledge, skills and understandings of educational research and practice.
  • Develop critical and analytical skills through discussion of relevant and substantive research in areas of specific interest.
  • Engage in wider and more general education debates.
  • Engage, develop and implement research methodologies in your own research project.


Articulation to/from Course

Diploma of Teaching, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Teaching, Diploma of Education


Full credit may be gained toward the Master of Education for work completed while enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Education. Please note that Schedule A and B of the Graduate Certificate of Education articulate into Schedule A or B of the Master of Education. Schedule C of the Graduate Certificate of Education articulate into Schedule C of the Master of Education. Schedule D of the Graduate Certificate of Education (TESOL) articulate into Schedule D of the Master of Education (TESOL).

Miscellaneous Information

International Students

The Faculty encourages international student enrolment in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Staff within the Faculty have gained considerable experience in teaching and supervising students from many countries, including Malaysia, China, Thailand and Indonesia.

International students wishing to study on-campus, in Australia, may only undertake the TESOL specialisation of the Graduate Certificate of Education (Schedule D; Launceston Campus). All other specialisations are undertaken through flexible/on-line learning and may be undertaken from your country of residence. International students undertaking specialisations other than TESOL will not be permitted to study these specialisations in Australia.
