Introduction
This two year undergraduate course is offered in Hobart, Tasmania and at Rozelle, NSW in parallel with the fast track B Nursing program. There is the ability, depending on student numbers, to conduct tutorials, workshops and lectures in Launceston and Burnie in the future.
It consists of generic Nursing, Bioscience and specialist Paramedic units and will be taught by the Faculty of Health Science - School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Midwifery and School of Human Life Sciences.
Students will undertake clinical placements in various ambulance stations and other specialist health facilities, such as hospitals. The student will be responsible for their transport and other associated costs during these clinical placements.
Candidates must complete the requirements of the degree in a maximum of 7 years from the time of first enrolment. Extension to the time is at the discretion of the Dean.
Admission & Prerequisites
In order to commence workplace integrated learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health Science and the School of Medicine policies relevant to workplace based learning which are contained in the Faculty `Safety for Practice Kit¿. These include a National Police Check, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this course. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.
Professional Recognition
Graduates will have met the professional requirements for employment as a Graduate Ambulance Paramedic and be eligible for membership of Paramedics Australasia.
Graduates will also possess the attributes to be employed in a Paramedic role within other occupations, such as industry emergency response personnel and community-based emergency health settings.
Miscellaneous Information
Driving is not a requirement or a component of the course but applicants are required to undertake a medical health assessment. As a Commercial Drivers Licence is a requirement for employment as a Graduate Paramedic, students will be counselled early in the course on these requirements.
